Day by day program
Arrive at your hotel in São Miguel.
ACCOMMODATION : hotel ** or 4* depending on selected option
Upon your arrival on Pico Island, you will immediately be struck by its unique landscapes. The network of stone walls, forming a true mineral labyrinth called currais, protects the vines from wind and sea spray while allowing the sun to gently warm them.
Once you pick up your rental car, you will cross the island via its vast central plateau to reach Lajes do Pico, a picturesque village with a feeling of being at the edge of the world.
This small town, located on the island’s southern coast, was once a key center for whaling until the early 1980s. A local museum tells the story of the whalers. Today, Lajes is renowned as a prime spot for whale watching.
We recommend visiting the museum before setting out on a short hike that will take you to the heights above Lajes, where the Vigie once stood to spot passing whales. You will then return to Lajes via a scenic trail winding from farm to farm, passing between the famous lava stone walls that surround the dairy cattle enclosures.
To finish your visit, why not enjoy a relaxing dip in the natural pools of Lajes after your walk?

Did you know that Portugal’s highest point reaches 2,351 meters on Pico Island? Today, we invite you to get close… and for the more adventurous, to attempt the climb. This adventure, however, requires good physical condition and proper equipment. If you wish, we can recommend a guide to accompany you, either privately or in a group.
This iconic peak, visible from every corner of the island, lies at the heart of the Montanha do Pico Natural Reserve. The reserve regulates access to the site and provides all the necessary information to prepare your ascent.
Once there, several options are available. You can opt for a short walk to Furna do Abrigo, a 45-minute route covering about 1 kilometer, or take on the challenge of climbing to the summit at 2,351 meters. This demanding route spans 3.8 km with an elevation gain of 1,150 meters. Allow approximately 3 hours to reach the summit, and a little longer for the descent.

Embark on a ferry crossing to Faial Island, a journey of about 30 minutes.
Faial is a unique place, offering a rare glimpse of what the Azores might have looked like before the archipelago was settled.
One of the island’s gems is the majestic Caldeira do Faial. This perfectly circular crater, with an inner diameter of about 2 kilometers and a depth of 400 meters, is a must-see. A 6-kilometer trail allows you to walk around it easily, offering breathtaking views.
For an even more immersive experience, you can descend into the heart of the Caldeira. It’s a fascinating, almost mystical adventure that makes you feel as if you can sense the very heartbeat of the island.

The hike begins in the village of Capelo, where a trail runs along the ocean, offering spectacular views of the coastal landscapes. Step by step, you approach the volcano, whose history is as fascinating as its imposing silhouette.
In 1957, a dramatic eruption occurred about a kilometer off the island’s western tip. For nearly a year, torrents of lava and ash transformed the landscape, creating a peninsula and burying the fishing village of Capelinhos under volcanic debris.
Today, this extraordinary site reveals a lunar-like landscape dominated by the historic lighthouse, a witness to the upheavals of that time. Although no longer in operation, the lighthouse now houses a volcanology interpretation center (optional visit), allowing visitors to explore the mysteries of this eruption.
After your exploration, you can relax by swimming in the natural pools near the small harbor, nestled at the foot of the volcano.

Embark on a two-hour ferry crossing to São Jorge, an island nestled in the heart of the central Azores. Wild and authentic, São Jorge enchants with its lush nature and preserved landscapes. It is particularly famous for its fajãs, fertile terraces formed by cliff collapses, where the meeting of steep terrain and peaceful plains creates a striking contrast.
After a transfer to the island’s central ridges, you will begin a memorable hike. An old mule track, once traveled by pilgrims, winds through diverse vegetation: vibrant hydrangeas, tree heathers, and fragrant junipers. As you descend, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the island’s majestic northern cliffs, eventually reaching Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo.
This isolated hamlet, accessible only on foot, transports visitors to another time. With its few houses, small church, and serene lagoon, it exudes an atmosphere of absolute tranquility. After a pause to admire the scenery, the hike continues along the coast, through landscapes full of mystery and raw beauty.
Your route ends at Fajã dos Cubres, where you can enjoy a well-deserved break at a small local bar while taking in the stunning ocean view.

Immerse yourself in the heart of São Jorge for an unforgettable day exploring its central ridges and the stunning Fajã d’Ouvidor, a true gem of the northern coast.
Your adventure begins on the plateau, where the trail winds between volcanoes and lush pastures, revealing authentic scenes of island farming life. The gradual ascent of Pico da Esperança, São Jorge’s highest point at 1,053 meters, is a must-do. When the skies are clear, the summit offers breathtaking views of the majestic Pico volcano, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding islands, all enhanced by clouds gently brushing the peaks.
After enjoying this exceptional panorama, you will embark on a long descent through the pastures toward the northern coast. The trail leads to Fajã d’Ouvidor, a wild and enchanting haven where houses nestle harmoniously at the foot of cliffs near the ocean. Here, natural pools carved into the volcanic rocks provide a refreshing break and a moment of relaxation to the rhythm of the waves.

Pico’s history is deeply rooted in the island’s wine culture, and this heritage remains alive, especially during the grape harvest when the still begins to distill the famous “Bagaço.”
Your hike starts in Madalena and takes you through a well-preserved area to Calhau. Along the way, take a break to explore the natural pools of Criação Velha, true gems of the coastline.
As you progress along the trail, you will be captivated by the island’s unique volcanic landscape. Lava stone walls, carefully built to protect the vines from wind and weather, showcase the ingenuity of Pico’s inhabitants. These skills transformed a harsh, arid soil into fertile land, giving rise to an exceptional wine: Verdelho.
To deepen your experience, visit the wine museum, housed in a former annex of a Carmelite convent. This remarkable building is surrounded by a beautiful pomegranate forest, adding a touch of serenity and beauty to this historically rich site.

The trail takes you through two tunnels carved into basalt rock, vestiges of an old irrigation system. (Be sure to bring a flashlight for this part of the hike!)
The highlight of this trek, the famous “Window of Hell,” is a natural opening in a cliff, framed by wild vegetation. From there, a spectacular panorama unfolds over an impressive canyon and its waterfalls, offering a breathtaking view.

From Furnas, begin a pleasant uphill walk along a shaded trail that will lead you to Pico do Ferro. This viewpoint offers a spectacular view over the Furnas Valley and its nestled lake, a true natural tableau.
Descend afterward toward the shores of Furnas Lake, surrounded by lush vegetation. Along the way, you will encounter the fascinating geothermal phenomena of the archipelago, such as fumaroles and solfataras. These volcanic manifestations are closely tied to local culinary traditions, including the famous "cozido," a stew slowly cooked using the natural heat of the earth.
To end the day on a relaxing note, enjoy a soak in the warm, sulfur-rich waters of Terra Nostra Park (entrance not included - closes at 4:30 pm) or in the thermal baths of Dona Beija (entrance not included).
